The meaning of the word ectopic is out of place. Thus when an signs and symptoms of ectopic pregnancy occurs, it implies that the fertilized egg gets planted elsewhere beyond the uterus. In 95% of the ectopic pregnancy cases, the egg settles in the fallopian tube. The other name for ectopic pregnancy is tubal pregnancy. Ovary, abdomen and cervix are the few other places an ectopic pregnancy can take place in. The unfortunate thing is that none of these other places have either as much space or as much tissue to help support the development of a fetus. Hence as the baby grows bigger, there are chances that the organ holding it will burst when it fails to carry the weight or pressure of the baby. This can cause much bleeding and can also pose threat the mother’s life. In most cases, a case of ectopic pregnancy does get terminated before the baby is allowed to grow very big.

Ectopic pregnancies are not easily detectable as the symptoms are those of early pregnancy. These common symptoms are those of a missed period, tenderness of the breasts, nausea, and vomiting, frequent urge to urinate. Pain and vaginal bleeding are the first signs of an ectopic pregnancy. Pains in the pelvis, stomach, shoulder, neck are not a healthy sign because you never know what kind of a hemorrhage you might be experiencing inside. Tha pain is described by most women as sharp and stabbing. It tends to concentrate on one side of the pelvis and varies in intensity from time to time. This pain will often be accompanied with vaginal spotting, dizziness or fainting and low blood pressure.

The treatment of an ectopic pregnancy depends on the medical condition of the mother and the size and location of the pregnancy. If it is detected early, an injection of methotrexate can help to stop the embryo from growing. If however the pregnancy gets aggravated, surgery happens to be the only option. Initially this operation used to be complex and large incisions across the pelvic area were made. But now even a laparoscopy can help. Whichever measure is adopted to treat your ectopic pregnancy, your doctor would insist on seeing you regularly after that to make sure that your hCG level normalize. This might take a few weeks. A high hCG could mean that some ectopic tissue remained inside. This tissue can be removed by yet another surgery or even just an injection depending on the amount of tissue left inside.

Some women who experience an ectopic pregnancy once might find it hard to conceive again, especially if the woman does suffer from fertility problems. However if the pregnancy did not cause you much damage the first time, you might still be able to conceive as your uterus walls are not damaged to the extent that it cannot hold another baby. Statistically if you have experienced an ectopic pregnancy, there are only 15% chances that you would conceive again. To help keep yourself from damaging your system to the extent where it cannot be cured, make sure you are regular at your doctor and very well updated about he state of your baby’s development and your bodily progress. In that case if you are experiencing an ectopic pregnancy, it will be detected and aborted at an earlier stage as well. In the process you will have sustained the least of damages.
