The causes of diabetes are many. Type 1 diabetes is believed to be an autoimmune illness. When the cells in the pancreas of the body are attacked, the functioning of the pancreas which is primarily to secrete insulin is hindered. There are chances that type 1 diabetes maybe be genetic in nature even though the genetic causes for type 2 diabetes is more definite. Environmental factors too, such as viral infections that cannot be avoided may also cause one to suffer from type 1 diabetes. Racial factors also playa vital role in type 1 diabetes. People with Hispanic or European origins tend to suffer type 1 diabetes more than others. Those with Asian descent rarely suffer from this kind of diabetes. Also men have a slightly higher probability of suffering type 1 diabetes than women do.

Type 2 diabetes however has very strong associations with genes. If somebody in your family has type 2 diabetes, you are very probable to get type 2 diabetes some time in your life as well. Many of the genes responsible for type 2 diabetes have already been identified and there are some that are still being experimented with. The reasons that you might develop type 2 diabetes are high blood pressure, high fat levels, gestational diabetes, if your baby weighs more than 9 pounds, high fat diet, high intake of alcohol, sedentary lifestyle, obesity and the like. Also certain ethnic groups have a higher chance of suffering type 2 diabetes than others. For example, African Americans, Native Americans, Japanese Americans and Hispanic Americans have greater chances of suffering type 2 diabetes as compared to the probabilities of Hispanic Whites. Lastly, increasing age is yet another contributor to type 2 diabetes. The risk beings to grow from the time one grows 45 years and begins to rise at a very high rate from 65 years.
