There are some symptoms that are associated with only type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes while there a bunch of symptoms which are associated with both in general. We will guide you through them one at a time.
Type 1 diabetes symptoms are mostly dramatic and occur very suddenly. It is often detected during a child’s growing up years, usually in association with another disease like urinary tract infection or something. Extra stress during adolescent years results in diabetic ketoacidosis. Symptoms of this would include nausea, vomiting, dehydration and disturbances in blood levels of potassium. If diabetic ketoacidosis is left untreated and neglected, it can lead to coma and eventually death.
Type 2 diabetes symptoms are usually less dramatic, more subtle are often associated with aging and obesity. It is possible that person suffering from type 2 diabetes would not even know he is suffering from it for years. People suffering this often develop the hyperglycemic hyperosmolar nonketotic syndrome. Steroids and stress are often causes that lead to type 2 diabetes. If type 2 diabetes is left untreated, it can lead to blindness, kidney failure, heart diseases and nerve damage.
There are some other symptoms that are not strictly associated with either one of the types but are very stark symptoms that happen to give you the first few signs of diabetes. Fatigue is one of those. If you are diabetic, you would notice that your body finds it difficult to use the glucose for creating energy in your body. On the contrary, the body uses the fat burning it and this makes the person feel fatigued. Diabetic people are also unable to break the calories of the food they eat. So even though they might be eating normal quantities, they might be suffering an unexplainable weight loss. The urine would cause the person to lose water and sugar and also cause dehydration. All this leads to weight loss. This excessive urination also makes the person feel more thirsty than normal. The increase in blood sugar levels demands the body to dilute the sugar. This condition is known as polydipsia. Excessive urination is referred to as polyuria which is another way in which the body tries to get rid of all the excess sugar accumulating in the body. Sometimes the body might secrete too much insulin to deal with the abnormal blood sugar levels of the body and this in turn stimulates hunger. This condition where the person wants to eat abnormally more is called polyphagia.
When the blood sugar levels shoot up, white blood cells are prevented which are required to defend the body against bacteria and also to clean up dead cells. But this does not seem possible and thus wounds take much longer to heal and also get infected easily. Also infections like yeast infections of the genitals, skin infections and recurring urinary tract infections are a sign of diabetes. Also even though blurry vision is not directly associated with diabetes, high blood sugar levels do affect the vision of a person to a certain extent.
