As a woman’s pregnancy progresses, changes within her body as well as changes in the fetus become much more overt and this is especially evident during the third trimester of pregnancy. During the last few weeks of a woman’s pregnancy, her body is changing to prepare itself for the delivery of the baby. The fetus inside is also developing rapidly to be able to function as a well-formed individual, in an environment different from its mother’s womb in a few weeks. Here we will discuss what changes one may expect both in the mother and in the child during the 42nd week of pregnancy in a woman.

For the mother, it is highly probable that labor may approach any time soon and in case pre-mature labor has not set in already, certain changes announce its arrival in the 42nd week. The mother must be prepared both mentally as well as logistically to welcome the baby anytime soon. Some of these signs may be identified as has been attempted here. The mother’s stools may become loose as also there might be discharges of blood-colored mucus from the vagina along with other vaginal discharges. Uterus contractions keep recurring but the intensity increases gradually. Discharge of what is known as the mucus plug takes place and its passing may be seen in the toilet. It is a mass of blood-tinged mucus but one must not get scared on observing this as it is perfectly normal during the 42nd week of pregnancy. Back ache is also regular and common and this must be treated manually as much as possible, avoiding the use of chemical medication as far as possible.

As changes take place within the mother’s body to prepare her for delivering the baby safely, the fetus inside her womb also develops gradually. During the 42nd week of a woman’s pregnancy, the baby’s weight slowly but steadily increases. However, the rate of the weight gain is slower now than in the preceding weeks. The placenta, which was meant to be an ad-hoc organ, is less functional now and it begins to disintegrate. Because of this, the baby’s growth, development and health has to be closely monitored my external means and machines. It is extremely important to choose and undergo the right medical programs and treatments at this point of time. The baby’s over-all development has to be tracked at each stage. If needed, both the mother and the child must be made to go through a stress evaluation test and based on the results of such a test, measures must be taken to alleviate all kinds of physical, mental or emotional stress. The mother must be made prepared on all fronts to undergo the childbearing procedure and the baby must be conditioned to face and adjust the new environment it is going to be born into.
