The development of your baby –
Your baby is growing some hair on the face during this week. This hair is very soft in texture and colourless. This hair is called lanugo and it is going to cover a lot of your baby’s body for the next few months till a few days before it is delivered. Your baby’s genitals are well developed now though you might not still be able to find out if it is a boy or a girl even with the help of an ultrasound examination. Now your baby is also producing thyroid hormones because this gland which produces the thyroid hormone has developed by now. The little baby inside you now weighs up to 45 gm and is about 9 cm in length from the top of the crown to the base of the rump.
The development of your body –
Under special conditions you might be discussed about some important things by your doctor. For example for mothers who are above 35 years of age, the doctor would talk about amniocentesis with them. This refers to a test which is performed between 15 to 18 weeks of the mother’s pregnancy. Amniocentesis helps to determine if the baby suffers from any kind of abnormality like down syndrome. This test consists of a very thin needle being inserted into the uterus to get a sample of the amniotic fluid which surrounds the growing baby. Then this sample fluid is analyzed. Amniocentesis might result in a miscarriage even though the chances of that are very rare. So make sure you have discussed the pros and cons of amniocentesis with your doctor before you go in for it. Most mothers rather blame themselves for a miscarriage than a test initiated by somebody else. So you have to take a wise decision because if your baby does suffer from an abnormality it is best you are equipped about it from the start rather than it comes as a shock to you later when you expect your bay to be perfect.
