These days there are very few complications that are associated with pregnancy and most deliveries are healthy and safe. Even when an emergency situation calls for a cesarean section, the mother always knew that this was one of the possibilities and the staff and doctors are as well prepared. Once the baby ahs been delivered, because the period of pregnancy is given so much of attention, it is assumed that all is well after the baby is born, but that is not always the case. Here we will discuss some of the post pregnancy complications which might emerge and the mother might have to face.
Post partum hemorrhaging is one of the most commonly faced post pregnancy complications. This causes a huge loss of blood after the delivery. Post partum hemorrhaging is caused by many factors. A long difficult labour, uterine fibroids that make it difficult for the uterus to go back to its normal shape, lacerations to the uterus, more than one baby having occupied the uterus, pieces of the placenta that have stayed inside even after the delivery etc. are reasons as to why a post partum hemorrhage could occur. A uterine massage is however very helpful to soothe the state of the uterus in these cases. Also it has been largely observed that breast feeding results in healing the bleeding and stimulating uterine contractions to help the uterus return to its normal shape and size.
Endometritis is another kind of infection that affects the lining of the uterus and that many women experience post pregnancy. This complication occurs when the uterus becomes susceptible to infection when the placenta is removed after the delivery of the child. This has higher chances of happening if a piece of the placenta has been left inside. The signs of endometritis are slight fever accompanied with a little pain in the lower abdominal region and also some horribly smelling vaginal discharge which might occasionally be blood. This can be treated as it often is with antibiotics.
Infections at the place of the perineal tear which is commonly called episiotomy is another common post pregnancy complication but not as drastic. Pain and tenderness beside the place of laceration is a sign of such an infection. Abdominal pain, thick discharge, fever and difficulties in urinating may also accompany. Antibiotics are used to cure such infections mostly but try to avoid contracting such an infection in the first place by keeping clean and being a little careful. Rinse your perineal site more often prefereably with luke warm water and change your maxi pads often. Avoid using tampons for post pregnancy bleeding. That has more chances of infecting your vagina. Try to keep your perineal spot stress free.
