Tubal pregnancy can be defined as a form of pregnancy that takes place when a fertilized egg also called an embryo implants itself on any other tissue inside the mother’s uterus other than the endometrial lining of the uterus. The chances of an tubal pregnancy are definitely rare but not miniscule. Even though 95% of pregnant women experience normal pregnancies, there are another 1.5% women who are listed as abdominal, 0.5% who are listed as ovarian and 0.03% who are listed as experiencing cervical pregnancies. Even though not all women who are experiencing tubal pregnancy are found to be in a fatal condition, but 1 out of every 2000 tubal pregnancy cases in the United States can be such an instance. About 40 to 50 pregnant women die due to having experienced an tubal pregnancy each year in the United States. However the rate has dropped considerably from the 1970s such as to apply that now lesser women would die from having an tubal pregnancy as was the case in the 1970s. There are some factors that seem to be risky for tubal pregnancies.

PID or Pelvic Inflammatory Disease
Women who have suffered a PID before seem to have 6 to 10 times increased chances of experiencing a tubal pregnancy. A study that was recently published studied 745 women who had suffered from PID and 16% of them were stated as being infertile due to the tubal occlusion they had experienced and of those who were able to conceive, 6.4% of them had tubal pregnancies. A PID occurs when Gonorrhea or Chlamydia invade the cervix till up to the uterus and the tubes. This infection is bound to inflame the area. While the body tries to fight the infection, bacteria, white blood cells and pus fill up these tubes and chambers. After a considerable period of the victim suffering, the body does win the fight against the infection and the bacteria are destroyed. However during the process of recovery, the linings of the tube which are very delicate are permanently scarred. Worse to worse, the ends of the fallopian tubes may also get partially or completely blocked and a kind of scar tissue forms on the exterior part of the tubes and ovaries. All this limits the chances of conceiving and experiencing a normal pregnancy in the future. Very strong antibiotics may be used to deal with a PID in which case fertility will be maintained and the damage to the tubes will be restricted.

Progestin Contraceptives
Progestin bearing contraceptives seem to be another very severe factor in leading to ectopic pregnancies. 10% of pregnancies that were diagnosed as ectopic, listed that these mothers used progestin contraceptives before they finally decided to get pregnant.

Tubal Sterilization
12% of women who undergo non laparoscopic tubal litigation or tubal sterilization happen to experience ectopic pregnancies later in their life. In the case of laparoscopic tubal coagulation, 51% of women experience ectopic pregnancies.

Other than these the chances of an ectopic pregnancy are increased if the woman has undergone a tubal surgery previously, if she has taken measures to stimulate her ovaries or if she chose to get pregnant through in vitro fertilization.
