Peritoneal mesothelioma is an uncommon malignancy but occurs in every one third of all mesotheliomas. It is understood to be universally fatal and has very few options as far as treatments are concerned. For patients who have been diagnosed with peritoneal mesothelioma and it has been confirmed, one of the better options for prognosis includes radical resection and it should be availed of whenever possible. Other treatment options for this disease would be using intensive loco regional therapeutic strategies such as early postoperative intraperitoneal chemotherapy, immunotherapy, cytoreducative surgery or hyperthermic intraoperative measures. Surgery may or may not be successful in the case of peritoneal mesothelioma.
The purpose of cytoreducative surgery is to eliminate all the tumours it can as it is often noticed that a complete removal of tumours is not possible. Post surgery the resection can be categorized by the quantity of cytoreduction score which estimates the remaining peritoneal seeding within the surgical area. The disadvantage in this case is that the score can be calculated only after surgery thus no information about the state of tumours can be gathered before the operation takes place. For patients who are detected with mesothelioma in the earlier stages, longevity is estimated to up to 36 months but for those diagnosed in the later stages; longevity increases only up to 7 months. This method is used for both invasive and non invasive cases of malignancy.
The other method is chemotherapy which can be performed either systematically or administered directly into the abdomen. The response will depend completely on the stage of the malignance when the patient has been diagnosed with it. When anti cancer drugs are introduced to the cancer zone directly, it is most effective against the peritoneal mesothelioma. Post surgery or even pre surgery there is another option of accessing intraperitoneal chemotherapy with the help of a tube which looks like a catheter. The pros of this method are that the drugs used are of very high quality, the concentration of these drugs is maximum and the toxic levels within the cavity are minimalistic.
However the standard treatment followed for the purpose of curing mesothelioma is conducting the cytoreductive surgery and then following it up with an intraperitoneal treatment. Thus whichever treatment you choose to acquire, do not forget that the consultation with a cancer treatment expert is mandatory as he will follow your medical history and physical state and be the best option to guide you through your prognosis once you have been diagnosed with peritoneal mesothelioma.
The disease is still relatively in its earliest stages and has not been exploited wholly. Thus the options for treatment and the chances of recovery are very less. Yet medical studies are being conducted every day to help come up with something more productive and reliable so patients diagnosed with peritoneal mesothelioma can be ensured that chemotherapy is not the only vestige of hope but there is something more definitive to look forward to. However if you fear chances of suffering from mesothelioma do not delay and get to a medical expert immediately.
