Pregnancy gingivitis is a common problem faced by women who are expecting. Their gums swell up and turn red, feel tender and also bleed when being flossed or brushed. Almost 50% of all pregnant women experience this problem. The level of higher progesterone in the body of the pregnant mother causes the gums to swell. There is excess blood supply during pregnancy all around the body, hence. There might also emerge a benign nodule on your gum which will bleed only when you brush, this nodule is seen only in pregnant woman and is called a pregnancy tumour, do not feel scared because this is not harmful or painful. They can appear anywhere on the body but most often they appear in the mouth. It should be gone once you have your baby but just in case it remains, you might have to get it surgically removed. You can also get it removed while you are pregnant if it causes too much of discomfort and unnecessary botheration.
Statistically, women with gum diseases tend to have a higher chance for preterm birth and preeclampsia. However when studies were conducted, there was no link to be found between gum diseases and of the before mentioned severe complications. However it is a good idea to take good care of your teeth and your gums whether you are pregnant or no and whether you have sensitive gums or no. if gingivitis is left untreated, it might worsen in condition and grow into periodontitis in which the problem is not just restricted to your gums but goes beyond to affect your bone and the surrounding tissues.
The best way to prevent your gum from bleeding or swelling is to maintain a hygienic oral condition. Brush regularly and thoroughly even though you must ensure that you do not put much pressure on your gums. Use brushes with soft bristles and toothpaste which have fluoride. Do not forget to floss daily. Visit the dentist on a weekly basis. Plaque and tarter needs to be removed which simple brushing will not help to do away with.
Maintaining your teeth will not only keep you safe from bleeding and painful gums but at the same time it will help to feel fresh and look good. A good dentist is a must have. Somebody who caters to you always is the best person to approach even while you are pregnant. If you are facing any severe discomfort in your mouth, consult your dentist immediately and he will help you through.
