When you have an excess of glucose in your blood stream which would also imply that you have extra blood sugar in your blood stream, you can be definite that you suffer from diabetes. Sugar in your blood is an essential as it serves as the source of energy for your body but again too much of it is not very healthy. Glucose does not only come from the food you eat but is also produced by your liver and muscles while the blood helps to carry all the glucose to the various cells in the body. Insulin is also another chemical produced by the pancreas that helps to moderate the levels of glucose in your body by helping the glucose to get absorbed by the cells. So if your insulin fails to work efficiently, the glucose would stay back in your blood and cause your level of glucose to rise causing either pre diabetes or diabetes.

Diabetes is understood to take place when the endocrine system of your body fails to maintain the level of blood sugar at the optimum level for the purpose of good health. Recently diabetes has become a very common problem. 10 to 12% of urban population and 4 to 6% of rural population of India are diabetic while the numbers in the United States is much greater. Due to diabetes there are a number of other health problems that arise as well. When the pancreas which is the producer of insulin in the body fails to produce enough insulin, the blood sugar levels in the body increase. There are two kinds of diabetes. Diabetes mellitus occurs when the blood sugar level begins to rise and diabetes insipidus occurs when there are problems in water reabsorbtion. Both of these can be caused by a number of factors, some of which are known and others which we are still unaware of.

Insulin is that hormone which has important effects on the metabolism of your body and other important functions. It is because of insulin in the liver, muscles, fats and other organs that allow them to absorb glucose from the blood to store it as glycogen so that it can be used to generate energy later. When insulin is low or absent, this glucose cannot be absorbed by the mentioned organs and the body begins to bank of the fats as a source of energy by different means such as transferring lipids from adipose tissues to the liver etc. Insulin has other anabolic effects throughout the body, if the level of insulin falls in the body, the result is diabetes mellitus.

Juvenile diabetes mellitus is more commonly known as type 1 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes causes metabolism disorders and the blood sugar levels shoot up inappropriately due to a lack of insulin secreted by the pancreas. Once a person has eaten, the food gets broken down into glucose. This sugar is then passed into the blood stream from where the cells of the body can absorb the sugar with the help of the hormone names insulin to give the body enough energy. Usually the pancreas is supposed to secrete the right amount of insulin. However if the person concerned is diabetic, the pancreas produces either very little or absolutely no insulin. In other cases, the cells may not respond to the insulin secreted in the body. Sugar content thus begins to accumulate in the blood, makes up much of the urine and leaves the body unused. Vital organs of the body such as heart, eyes, kidneys, nerves can be responsible for the development of diabetes especially if the condition has been left neglected over a very long period of time.

Diabetes is a major metabolic disorder in which the body stops converting sugars, starches and other forms of food into energy. Most of the food you consume is turned into a kind of glucose that gets absorbed by the various organs and tissues to help provide your body with energy and all this happens with the help of a hormone secreted by the pancreas called insulin. When insulin however stops being released, the blood sugar levels increase causing the state of diabetes in an individual. There are primarily two kinds of diabetes. Type 1 diabetes or juvenile onset diabetes and type 2 or adult onset diabetes. Both of these have been discussed time and over again previously so we will discuss here only the kind of diet that a diabetic patient must indulge in. whether you are suffering type 1 or type 2 diabetes, it is necessary that you eat a healthy diet and balance it out well. Diabetes:Diabetes can be defined as a disorder in which lack of insulin results in failure to absorb sugar and starch properly. It is a metabolic condition characterized by elevated glucose absorption in the blood. It prevents glucose from being used by the body correctly. Insulin determines the amount of glucose in the blood. Because glucose cannot be stored or used directly by the body, insufficient insulin leads to an increase in blood sugar levels.
People who have diabetes in their near relations are more prone to diabetes. However, there are other risk factors which bring us closer to the disease such as physical inactivity, obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, pancreatic abnormalities. Diabetes is growing at an alarming rate more people are prone to having the disease because of busy lifestyles. People have no time for their health and by maintaining wrong habits they throw themselves at the risk of various diseases one of them is diabetes. It is one of the major causes of premature death worldwide.
There are various symptoms which detect diabetes for e.g. being very thirsty, frequent urination, weight loss, increased appetite, poor or blurry vision, irritability, tingling or numbness in the hands or feet, frequent skin problems, bladder or gum infections, delayed healing of wounds, extreme fatigue, nausea, poor circulation in the limbs.
WHO predicts that developing countries will bear the brunt of this epidemic in the 21st century, with 80% of all new cases of diabetes expected to appear in the developing countries by 2025. . (Reference: WHO Journal)
There are two types of Diabetes Type 1 and Type 2
Type 1 diabetes: It is an autoimmune disease. Insulin dependent diabetes is the result of the pancreas being unable to make enough insulin. This type of diabetes normally affects children but can affect adults as well. Type 1 diabetics are insulin dependent and must take insulin every day.
Type 2 diabetes: – Non-insulin dependent occurs because the cells of the body become resistant to insulin. Adults are most often diagnosed with this type of diabetes.
Some may need medication while others can control their blood sugar levels by monitoring their diet, exercising moderately, and losing weight (if they are obese). Some Type 2 diabetics must take insulin or other medications daily. Read the rest of this entry »
