Mesothelioma is a kind of cancer that originates in the mesothelium which is the protective lining covering the internal organs of the body such as the lungs, heart and abdomen. Peritoneal mesothelioma is an uncommon malignancy but occurs in every one third of all mesotheliomas. It is understood to be universally fatal and has very few options as far as treatments are concerned. For patients who have been diagnosed with peritoneal mesothelioma and it has been confirmed, one of the better options for prognosis includes radical resection and it should be availed of whenever possible. Other treatment options for this disease would be using intensive loco regional therapeutic strategies such as early postoperative intraperitoneal chemotherapy, immunotherapy, cytoreducative surgery or hyperthermic intraoperative measures. Surgery may or may not be successful in the case of peritoneal mesothelioma.
