The mesothelium is a lining that protects the body parts inside such as the abdominal cavity, the chest cavity, the lungs etc. this membrane covers all the internal organs of the human body. The mesothelium also secretes fluids that are necessary for the organs in the body to function properly. For example, the fluid that the lungs need to expand and contract while the process of breathing is taking place is produced by the mesothelium. Along with providing with fluids needed for the lung to stretch, the lining also provides with fluids for the intestines to move flexibly for the purpose of the food to get digested correctly and also enables the heart to contract and expand freely. The mesothelium that protects the lungs is called the pleura, the mesothelium surrounding the heart is called the pericardium and the mesothelium around the abdomen is called the peritoneum. Each of these important organs must have the important fluids that are needed for them to function in the best ways by the body. Mesothelioma is the malignant cancer of the lining protecting these vital organs which is also called the mesothelium. The mesothelium comprises of two layers and this cancer, mesothelioma begins in the middle of these two layers. Mesothelioma is usually not diagnosed till the cancer has reached one of the latest stages as the symptoms are not spotted by the patient till very late. Thus when mesothelioma is diagnosed, is has already begun to affect the proper functioning of the mesothelium. This is the point from where the body cavity begins to gradually stop functioning or even responding to any form of concrete treatment. When mesothelioma occurs, the cells of the mesothelium begin to divide and disintegrate thus ruining the capacity to perform over a long stretch of time. Once the malignance is conceived, the cells begin to breakdown at an uncontrollable and abnormal rate. This cell disintegration can damage even the functioning of those organs that are only located nearby the infected organ and if it is left untreated or neglected, then the malignance will spread to even the vital organs of the body and cause tremendous hazards such as even death. The effects of mesothelioma begin to show along with the symptoms as the tumours inside the body begin to get larger and fluids begin to fill up the mesothelium walls. Since mesothelium is a form of cancer, it is dangerous to the human body cavity. This malignance is however a relatively new discovery and research is being carried out on a regular basis to find more options for treating mesothelioma. It is very difficult to diagnose this vicious form of cancer since firstly it is a very uncommon disease and secondly most of the symptoms can be read as the same as many other everyday illnesses. So you need to be more aware and keep your eyes open so the moment any of these symptoms are noticed and you feel that it needs a doctor’s attention, avail yourself of a medical expert without delay.
