Pregnancy is a rather fascinating period in a woman’s life. There are strange things you might not know about pregnancy that we will tell you here in the following bulletins.
1. Every year, about six million pregnancies get reported in the United States alone which is to mean that at a time, there are 4% of American women reporting pregnant.
2. Only 25% of couples who are trying to have a baby will be able to successfully get pregnant during the woman’s first menstrual cycle. On the contrary, 75% will succeed within a year’s time.
3. 10% of pregnancies eventually end in miscarriage and in most cases the woman suffers the miscarriage even without knowing she is pregnant.
4. Annually, at least 1.2 million American women opt to end their pregnancy by seeking the aid of an early termination.
5. Conventionally, 3% of all expecting mothers deliver twins but this rate has seen a significant increase of 60% since the beginning of the 1980s.
6. Nigeria experiences the maximum number of twin pregnancies in the world and this has often been associated with the consumption of yam by Nigerians.
7. There are at least 500000 babies that are born to teen age mothers in the United States of America.
8. Post partum depression is a common problem to most women after they have delivered their babies every 13 out of 100 U.S. women have been termed depressed after their delivery.
9. 30 years ago, babies in the U.S. would weigh around 6 pounds at birth, recently this has shot up to the baby weighing around 8 pounds at birth.
10. The Guinness Book of World Records states that the largest baby to survive that has ever been born was 14 pounds and 13 ounces heavy and 23 inches long.
11. Only 1% of American women would want to deliver their babies at home while on the other hand 30% of Dutch women prefer to deliver their babies at home.
12. One out of every three babies is delivered through a cesarean section operation. This rate has risen to 46% only from 1996.
13. The Time Magazine states that the longest gestation period to have ever been held is over a period of 375 days against the usual 280 days and the baby was not even unusually big. It was only 6 pounds and 15 ounces heavy.
14. The maximum number of children that have ever been born at a single time from a mother is seven. At present there are three sets of septuplets in the world – one in Saudi Arabia, one in Iowa and the other in Washington D.C.
15. Less than 10% babies are born on their due dates, 50% are born a week later while 90% are born in two weeks time.
16. Pregnant women should eat at least 300 extra calories than they otherwise do. This is equal to half a bagel and one serving of yogurt.
17. Even though there are many rumours about microwaves affecting the unborn fetus, this rumour does not hold true.
18. Nosebleeds and gum bleeds are common for pregnant women as they occur due to hormonal changes in the body.
19. Some women might begin to lactate as early as the second trimester.
20. The baby maybe placed high or low in an expecting mother. This does not help to determine the gender of the baby. It depends only on the body structure of the expecting mother.
21. Many women experience a glow in their skin and hair during their pregnancy. This usually is due to hormonal changes and an in take of extra dosage of vitamins.
22. Many women will need to wear shoes that are half an inch bigger than the usual size they wear. This is not because your feet become bigger or longer, only a lot of fluid is accumulated in your feet.
